My Teaching Philosophy

I believe in empowering students to be confident, artistic performers. My most important job as an educator is making students feel at ease because that's where the best learning happens. In flute lessons we will find strengths, address weaknesses with kindness, and explore new interests!

Frequently Asked Questions

What will we work on in flute lessons?

We will work on all the things involved in becoming a well-rounded flutist and musician, including but not limited to:

  • tone production

  • technique

  • phrasing, musicality, & dynamics

  • intonation

  • relaxed, efficient posture

  • music theory

  • ensemble etiquette

  • improvisation

  • how to develop an effective practice routine

What music can I play?

While we cover lots of classical music in lessons, we also play jazz standards, Broadway tunes, traditional Irish music, pop music, and tunes from popular movies. I am supportive of all the musical genres you wish to explore with your flute and will support you every step of the way. I am a big proponent of improvisation and regularly accompany my students on the piano during improv sessions and other repertoire.

How old do I have to be to start playing the flute?

I recommend starting at age 8 or later because most students under 8 have some difficulty reaching the flute keys. However, modified instruments (curved headjoints, Nuvo flutes) are also available if your child has a strong interest in starting now.

Can I have flute lessons if I'm an adult?

Yes! I have amazing adult students who are dedicated and inspiring. I love teaching adults and highly recommend flute lessons. For many, it's a great time to reconnect with an old hobby or to begin a new one. Whether you're starting the flute again after a long break away from it or starting the flute for the very first time, have no fear. I'm here for you!

Can you help me prepare for my upcoming audition?

Yes! Whether it's for school chair placement, honor band, or youth orchestra, I am here to help. The process of taking auditions is very rewarding whether you get the desired outcome or not. We incorporate the repertoire and other skills into lessons and take mock auditions to prepare ourselves mentally. It's amazing resilience training for all!
